School Insight: Community Garden

The International School of Creative Science at Nad Al Sheba is a leading school for students studying the British curriculum in Dubai. ISCS aims for academic excellence while creating a nurturing environment where students can learn to be innovative and creative, and develop critical thinking skills. We also instil our students with strong moral values and teach them to be productive, contributing members of the global community. The school’s dedication to creating a nurturing environment, where all students feel inspired and safe to express their creativity, led to a recent project involving everyone, from the students themselves, to parents and staff members.

Everyone from ISCS Nad al Sheba community came together to create a community garden that not only made the school more beautiful but also gave everyone a chance to bond with each other. The project went through several stages before it was completed. Students and their parents came to school over many Saturdays and over winter break to help the school staff finish the garden. They thoroughly enjoyed the process of creating something with their own hands.

With the enthusiastic help of their teachers, the students got their hands dirty pouring soil into the plant holders and planting colourful flowers and fruit. Working as a team, the children showed that they truly were part of a community. They helped each other with various tasks and took responsibility for cleaning up after themselves. The rest of the area was decorated with inspirational graffiti, and a bench was added in the perfect viewing location, just in case a quick afternoon session of introspection is ever needed. The garden will grow even further over the next few months, so the children will see the practical results of their hard work. This was a learning experience for everyone at ISCS Nad al Sheba, providing a nice break from the planned classes for the school, which is usually busy teaching the British curriculum in Dubai. Although the garden is just a small collection of plants, it is a symbol of the growth of our little community and the dedication of the people in it. This is a memory both the school staff and children will cherish for the rest of their lives.
